Housing Assistance

As of December 2024, the Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that over 35,000 veterans are currently homeless. At the New Jersey Veteran Service Alliance (NJVSA), we believe this figure significantly underrepresents the reality, as it does not account for veterans who may be staying temporarily with family or friends or those at risk of homelessness due to rent arrears. We believe the true number is substantially higher.

At NJVSA, we collaborate with other nonprofits to secure emergency housing, and we provide assistance for those in need of longer-term solutions.

short-Term Housing

We begin with a consultation to assess the veteran's needs and determine whether short-term or long-term housing is required. If short-term housing is appropriate we partner with the NJ SOS Veteran Stakeholders Group to offer emergency hotel accommodations for three nights

Long-Term Housing

As part of the transition to long-term housing, we provide initial hotel stays through our partnership with the NJ SOS Veteran Stakeholders Group. Many veteran transitional housing programs require medical clearance to confirm the absence of communicable diseases. We coordinate a medical examination with one of our partner physicians during the hotel stay. Once cleared medically, we assist veterans in completing the necessary applications for long-term transitional housing.

Ongoing Support

Once the veteran is stabilized, our work with them continues on. Once in housing, we continue to assist them through an evaluation of their eligibility for benefits, and work with them through the application process. Ultimately, we strive to create lasting change for our veterans.
